Been working on filling the woodshed. One load at a time.
Finally got around to tossing in a bit of Chard in the cold frames. I found it at Whole Foods a few weeks ago. Couldn't resist trying it after reading about the Five Color Silverbeet in the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.
The autumn lettuce crop is doing very nicely under glass.
The ladies were a bit disappointed they couldn't have a bite... or two.
The carrots buried under the leaf stacks are doing great. I love going out to dig a fresh carrot for a snack or a salad. A bit of fresh picked lettuce for our dinner last night. So much better than the summer lettuce. Must be the cooler weather!

I love these photos...do you edit them in software or are they "as is"? They're wonderful... I'm envious of your chard...when I went to get seeds they didn't have the colorful ones...so in my impatience, I got the plain. And they're not organic either. :(

Okay, this post totally impressed me. You're firewood and shed look awesome. Try as I may, it is difficult to make my wood stack look neat and tidy. Then the cold frames! Only another gardener would have heart palpitations just looking at cold frames! (Love the chickens looking in - they KNOW that's good stuff).

Your lettuce looks great. We should have planted some in the hoop house but the plastic tore and we took it down. Maybe it isn't too late to try a little in a cold frame.
Sadly, we couldn't grow chard this year, I'm not sure what happened.
Stacking your own firewood is very fulfilling. And about those chickens trying to get the greens, I opened up my hoop house and the chickens got the best of it. Trampled and scratched up any seedlings that were there. The glass panes look like a safer option.
Whenever I see stacked firewood like that I think of the Swiss and Austrians whose mountain houses and chalets typically have winter supplies neat and tidy for the impending snow. Oh to be that organised! Good work on the lettuce ;)
I bought *gasp* supermarket carrots recently in effort to keep my remaining carrots in the ground until we get a few good frosts. I used to think organic carrots tasted good, but after being spoiled by sweet homegrown sticks this summer they are not living up to their reputation.
The girls have lettuce envy, too funny!
I wish I would have planted a fall garden but after all the summer garden hoopla...I had no ambition! I, too, like the picture of the chickie eyeing the goods! : )
Looks like your woodshed is getting darn near full. Ours still needs a little extra. Funny too as my husband falls timber for a living. We should be the last people on earth that need wood in the woodshed!

It always feels to me like stacking wood is an unending job! I agree the fall lettuce seems to taste better certainly a cool loving crop! It looks great at your house xo

I'm still in the middle of reading "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" - such a good book. I'm admiring what I can see of your cold frames. I may have access to a few old windows next week so I can make my own.

I love your cold frames. Hopefully we'll get ours built early in the spring. Or at least after it's above freezing here. Ick! Beautiful chard and chickens. Envy!!
